    Graph Regularized Non-negative Matrix Factorization By Maximizing Correntropy

    Non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) has proved effective in many clustering and classification tasks. The classic ways to measure the errors between the original and the reconstructed matrix are l2l_2 distance or Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence. However, nonlinear cases are not properly handled when we use these error measures. As a consequence, alternative measures based on nonlinear kernels, such as correntropy, are proposed. However, the current correntropy-based NMF only targets on the low-level features without considering the intrinsic geometrical distribution of data. In this paper, we propose a new NMF algorithm that preserves local invariance by adding graph regularization into the process of max-correntropy-based matrix factorization. Meanwhile, each feature can learn corresponding kernel from the data. The experiment results of Caltech101 and Caltech256 show the benefits of such combination against other NMF algorithms for the unsupervised image clustering

    Increasing prevalence of HIV and syphilis but decreasing rate of self-reported unprotected anal intercourse among men who had sex with men in Harbin, China: results of five consecutive surveys from 2006 to 2010

    Background To monitor the prevalence of HIV and syphilis as well as behaviours, a sentinel site for men who have sex with men was established in Harbin in 2002. With additional funding, the sentinel surveillance evolved into annual cross-sectional surveys since 2006. Methods Behavioural and serological data collected in five consecutive cross-sectional surveys were analysed. SPSS 13.0 was applied to compare prevalence of HIV and syphilis as well as behavioural variables over time by demographic variables, bivariate and multivariate analysis. Results The prevalence of HIV and syphilis increased from 1.0% in 2006 to 7.5% in 2010 and from 9.2% in 2006 to 22.4% in 2009, respectively, whereas the rate of unprotected anal intercourse decreased from 61.3% in 2006 to 47.1% in 2010. Syphilis positivity and HIV infection are independently associated with each other across years. The rate of unprotected anal sex remains high although it has decreased over the years. Conclusion Findings support an increasing prevalence of HIV and syphilis among men who have sex with men in Harbin. Targeted behavioural intervention and syphilis treatment are urgently needed to prevent the epidemic from growin

    Diamond Deposition on Graphite in Hydrogen Microwave Plasma

    Hydrogen plasma etching of graphite generates radicals that can be used for diamond synthesis by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). We studied the etching of polycrystalline graphite by a hydrogen microwave plasma, growth of diamond particles of the non-seeded graphite substrates, and characterized the diamond morphology, grain size distribution, growth rate, and phase purity. The graphite substrates served simultaneously as a carbon source, this being the specific feature of the process. A disorder of the graphite surface structure reduces as the result of the etching as revealed with Raman spectroscopy. The diamond growth rate of 3 – 5 µm/h was achieved, the quality of the produced diamond grains improving with growth time due to inherently nonstationary graphite etching process

    Photopolymerized maleilated chitosan/methacrylated silk fibroin micro/nanocomposite hydrogels as potential scaffolds for cartilage tissue engineering

    Hydrogels composed of natural materials exhibit great application potential in artificial scaffolds for cartilage repair as they can resemble the extracellular matrices of cartilage tissues comprised of various glycosaminoglycan and collagen. Herein, the natural polymers with vinyl groups, i.e. maleilated chitosan (MCS) and methacrylated silk fibroin (MSF) micro/nanoparticles, were firstly synthesized. The chemical structures of MCS and MSF micro/nanoparticles were investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Then MCS/MSF micro/nanocomposite hydrogels were prepared by the photocrosslinking of MCS and MSF micro/nanoparticles in aqueous solutions in the presence of the photoinitiator Darocur 2959 under UV light irradiation. A series of properties of the MCS/MSF micro/nanocomposite hydrogels including rheological property, equilibrium swelling, sol content, compressive modulus, and morphology were examined. The results showed that these behaviors could be tunable via the control of MSF content. When the MSF content was 0.1%, the hydrogel had the compressive modulus of 0.32±0.07MPa, which was in the range of that of articular cartilage. The in vitro cytotoxic evaluation and cell culture of the micro/nanocomposite hydrogels in combination with mouse articular chondrocytes were also investigated. The results demonstrated that the micro/nanocomposite hydrogels with TGF-β1 was biocompatible to mouse articular chondrocytes and could support cells attachment well, indicating their potential as tissue engineering scaffolds for cartilage repair.This study was supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China (Grant No. 51203123, 51403165, 51503161) and the National Key Research and Development Program of China (No.2016YFA0101102)

    Wideband Power Spectrum Sensing: a Fast Practical Solution for Nyquist Folding Receiver

    The limited availability of spectrum resources has been growing into a critical problem in wireless communications, remote sensing, and electronic surveillance, etc. To address the high-speed sampling bottleneck of wideband spectrum sensing, a fast and practical solution of power spectrum estimation for Nyquist folding receiver (NYFR) is proposed in this paper. The NYFR architectures is can theoretically achieve the full-band signal sensing with a hundred percent of probability of intercept. But the existing algorithm is difficult to realize in real-time due to its high complexity and complicated calculations. By exploring the sub-sampling principle inherent in NYFR, a computationally efficient method is introduced with compressive covariance sensing. That can be efficient implemented via only the non-uniform fast Fourier transform, fast Fourier transform, and some simple multiplication operations. Meanwhile, the state-of-the-art power spectrum reconstruction model for NYFR of time-domain and frequency-domain is constructed in this paper as a comparison. Furthermore, the computational complexity of the proposed method scales linearly with the Nyquist-rate sampled number of samples and the sparsity of spectrum occupancy. Simulation results and discussion demonstrate that the low complexity in sampling and computation is a more practical solution to meet the real-time wideband spectrum sensing applications

    Distributed UAV Swarm Augmented Wideband Spectrum Sensing Using Nyquist Folding Receiver

    Distributed unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) swarms are formed by multiple UAVs with increased portability, higher levels of sensing capabilities, and more powerful autonomy. These features make them attractive for many recent applica-tions, potentially increasing the shortage of spectrum resources. In this paper, wideband spectrum sensing augmented technology is discussed for distributed UAV swarms to improve the utilization of spectrum. However, the sub-Nyquist sampling applied in existing schemes has high hardware complexity, power consumption, and low recovery efficiency for non-strictly sparse conditions. Thus, the Nyquist folding receiver (NYFR) is considered for the distributed UAV swarms, which can theoretically achieve full-band spectrum detection and reception using a single analog-to-digital converter (ADC) at low speed for all circuit components. There is a focus on the sensing model of two multichannel scenarios for the distributed UAV swarms, one with a complete functional receiver for the UAV swarm with RIS, and another with a decentralized UAV swarm equipped with a complete functional receiver for each UAV element. The key issue is to consider whether the application of RIS technology will bring advantages to spectrum sensing and the data fusion problem of decentralized UAV swarms based on the NYFR architecture. Therefore, the property for multiple pulse reconstruction is analyzed through the Gershgorin circle theorem, especially for very short pulses. Further, the block sparse recovery property is analyzed for wide bandwidth signals. The proposed technology can improve the processing capability for multiple signals and wide bandwidth signals while reducing interference from folded noise and subsampled harmonics. Experiment results show augmented spectrum sensing efficiency under non-strictly sparse conditions

    Altered mitochondrial lymphocyte in overweight schizophrenia patients treated with atypical antipsychotics and its association with cognitive function

    ObjectiveIncreasing evidence indicated that schizophrenia and obesity are associated with altered mitochondrial and immune function. In this study, we investigated the levels of CRP (C-reactive protein) and mitochondrial lymphocytes in chronically treated schizophrenia patients with atypical antipsychotic medications and further explored the relationship between mitochondrial lymphocyte and weight gain as well as cognitive function in these patients.MethodsWe evaluated the mitochondrial lymphocyte count of 97 patients (53 overweight, 44 non-overweight) and 100 healthy controls using mitochondrial fluorescence staining and flow cytometry (NovoCyte, Agilent Technologies, US). The serum CRP was measured by high-sensitivity enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Clinical symptoms and cognitive function of the patients were assessed using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS).ResultsThe results showed that mitochondrial lymphocyte counts of CD3+ T, CD3+CD4+ T, and CD3+CD8+ T cells in schizophrenia patients were higher than in the control group (p < 0.05). Additionally, overweight patients had significantly higher mitochondrial lymphocyte counts of CD3+ T and CD3+CD4+ T cells compared to schizophrenia patients with normal weight. Stratified analysis by gender revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in CD3+CD4+ mitochondrial lymphocyte count in male patients (p = 0.014) and a marginal trend toward significance in female patients (p = 0.058). Furthermore, the mitochondrial lymphocyte counts of CD3+ T and CD3+CD4+ T cells, as well as CRP levels, were positively correlated with BMI in schizophrenia patients, but the mitochondrial lymphocyte counts of CD3+CD4+ T cells were negatively correlated with the language scale in the RBANS.ConclusionOur study results provide evidence for the association between altered mitochondrial T lymphocyte and weight gain as well as cognitive impairment in schizophrenia patients treated with atypical antipsychotic medications
